Why Men Should Learn to Follow

Filed under: Salsa — ealing @ 12:22 pm

There's a double standard at work in the gender-to-dance-role function in salsa.

Once out of improvers, it's considered quite normal and admirable for a woman to learn to lead. Men learning to follow, though, is rather more unusual, and I think this should change.

I was going to write something involved about how it deepens your understanding of the dance, your appreciation for good leading technique, how it makes it easier to tackle new material. All of that is true, but it's not the main reason. The main reason you should learn to follow once you've learned to lead is that it's actually fun.

Just like learning to dance on two after mastering the timing of on one, it can be pretty tricky to start with. It gets easier though, and if you're much like me, then learning a new skill is its own reward.

  1. No, no, it’s not fun! shush! people will think you’re a hommer!

It’s all about technique, deeper understanding, that’s it, yep, that’s it…

    Wanna dance?

  2. > Wanna dance?

Yes – are you going to make it to Heathrow or Salsology?

As for people thinking I’m gay – since I dance, 99.9% of men already think I’m gay. If the leading-but-never-following remainder now also think I’m gay, I’m not really much worse off, am I?
