The Best Salsa Band in the World

Filed under: Salsa — ealing @ 1:43 am

Since you were wondering, my vote for best salsa band in the world goes to Manny Oquendo y Libre.

They have been around since 1974, when Andy Gonzalez and Manny Oquendo took off from Eddie Palmieri’s Perfecta. Given their incredible talent, it is tragic that they have recorded less than ten times.

But the stuff they have recorded… wow. My favorite album is probably Ahora!, with Tu Me Perteneces, Asia Minor and Obsession all being top-drawer tracks. Their horn line always sounds fresh. Herman Olivera, sonero in most of their recordings, has never sounded better. It’s Jimmy Bosch’s favourite band to play with. Why this band is not bigger with UK DJs is a mystery to me.

According to the Latin Percussion site, Libre are releasing a new album this year, and will tour Europe to promote it. Whether or not they come to the UK, I will be there.
