Be Broadband Progress – Complete

Filed under: Internet — ealing @ 6:45 pm

The modem came yesterday, and our current connection went dead this morning. At lunchtime I installed and configured the modem, which involved a 20 minute tech support phone call, and now it works.

The phone call was actually rather better than I hoped, as my problem was solved comparatively quickly. It looks as though I just got the netmask on the external connection wrong. I don’t yet know anything about wireless networking, but I was surprised to see that it was enabled and unencrypted by default.

Anyway, we’re now synched to the outside world at 15 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up. Yay!

Tube Busker Surprise

A couple of days ago I heard a busker in Tottenham Court Road station. Nothing new there. What was amazing, though was that the tune being played was neither Take Five nor the Theme from The Godfather. Fantastic!

BritSalsaFest Part I: The Metropole Sucks

After paying cash at the door for the Mambocity 5* congress last year, I decided to save myself money and hassle by booking as early as possible for future congresses. This has not worked as well as hoped.

order_status_24_01_06It looks as though the Be connection is still going according to schedule. If the modem is dispatched today, it should be received tomorrow, the day before the cutover.

The Students of Today

I spent last night in the Huntley Street Bar of the UCL Medics' Union. Two different things struck me about the students who frequented that building.

Building a Home Fileserver pt I: Assembly

Filed under: Technology — ealing @ 9:21 pm

Having owned and used computers for over ten years now, I realised recently that I had masses of data and software from all of that period, some of it on very dodgy media, and that it was just a matter of time until some it was lost to disk failure or some other techno-mishap. So I decided to build a fileserver, and try to impose some order on things. (more…)

Be Broadband Progress

order_status_2.jpgThe second light on my Be Order status page went green last night. Be emailed me, at an address I had to create to register with them, to say that my live date would be the 26th of January, and I should receive my modem on the 24th.

So, progress is being made. Perhaps there will be no more problems!

Trying to Get Faster Broadband

Filed under: Bad Customer Service, Internet — ealing @ 11:56 pm

With a flat-wide consensus that the Pipex service was too slow, I was put in charge of finding a new provider. After reading Stef Magdalinski’s account of Be Unlimited’s 24 Mbps service, I thought I’d give them a try.

Candidate Colour Coding

Filed under: Current Affairs — ealing @ 6:12 pm

The BBC News article on the Lib Dem leadership hustings gives a little detail on each of the candidates platforms. What caught my attention though, was the picture at the bottom of the page, of the candidates sitting together.
